  • President Obama Launches White House Internship Program President Obama today launched the White House Internship Program for his administration and announced that applications are currently being accepted for the summer of 2009. Those selected to participate in the program will gain valuable job experience and an inside look at the life of White House staff while building leadership skills. “This program will mentor and cultivate young leaders of today and tomorrow and I’m proud that they will have this opportunity to serve,” said President Obama. “I look forward to working w ith those that are selected to participate and I want to commend all who apply for their desire to help through public service to forge a brighter future for our country.”20 In addition t o normal office duties, interns will supplement their learning experience by attending a weekly lecture series hosted by senior White House staff, help at White House social events, and volunteer in community service projects. The 2009 Summer Internship program runs from May 22nd to August 14th and the submission deadline is March 22, 2009. Those interested in applying to the White House Internship Program must be:
  • US Citizens
  • Eighteen years of age on or before the first day of the internship.
  • Enrolled in a college or university (2-4 year institution) or must have graduated from college in the past two years.
  • Interns will be placed in a departmental office for their internship. Below is a list of departments in the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President where interns could be placed.

  • Spring 2009 Internship Program at the SUNY State College of Optometry.Program will be held Tuesday, May 26 to Saturday, June 6 at the SUNY State College of Optometry. The Deadline for submission of applications is Monday, May 1st, 2009.Only NY State residents who are full-time undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Students will receive a stipend of + $20 per day to defray transportation and lunch costs. Please note that we are not responsible for providing housing, but might be able to help a student secure a living arrangement for the duration of the internship.   • UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM The University at Albany Summer Research Program (UASRP) considers research an integral part of the undergraduate college experience and a way to encourage graduate study because it integrates students early into the research culture. Therefore, UAlbany sponsors an annual Summer Research Program which offers qualified traditional underrepresented undergraduates an enriching and valuable research experience. Participants are placed under the direction of faculty members and researchers from the University at Albany, Albany Medical College, NYS Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center, Stratton Medical Center, RPI, & the College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering at the University at Albany for an intensive 8 or 12 week residential program. This is a unique opportunity to receive hands-on training in academic research and scholarly writing. The UASRP also features a variety of seminars and workshops designed to enhance skills needed for graduate study. UASRP Program Dates: June 7, 2009 -July 31, 2009. The deadline to apply is: March 13, 2009. The application process consist of the following, an application, contract, 2 letters of recommendation, a resume, personal statement and transcripts from every institution you have attended. Students are required to have a 2.8 GPA and must be from a traditional underrepresented minority group or economically disadvantage . Program incentives include a free room on campus, free meal plans, and $2,500 stipend for the summer.   • PAID REU SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM AT UB The chemistry REU site at the University at Buffalo is a ten week program running from June 1 to August 7, 2009 for rising juniors and rising seniors. While there is no set GPA, candidates will be selected on a competitive basis. REU participants will have a choice of projects including research in chemical biology/medicinal chemistry, analytical, environmental, catalysis and inorganic/organic materials chemistry. Collaborative projects with faculty in engineering, physics, biology and medicine are available. Other highlights of the program include: Trips to academic and industrial research labs including: Praxair, Honeywell, Ecology & Environment, Wilson Greatbatch and the Great Lakes Research Center. There will be opportunities to present research including a poster session competition to win a trip to an ACS meeting. Trips to the Niagara Falls & power station, Shakespeare in the park, outdoor music events and summer festivals Weekly lecture series on global sustainability issues, professional skills, career choices, and scientific ethics.   • NEW YORK UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF DENTRISTRY OPEN HOUSE NYU College of Dentistry’s Open House is hosted by the office of Student Affairs and Admissions. The program will take place on March 21, 2009 from 9:00am to 12:00pm at the David B. Kriser Dental Center. This is located in room 614 on the 6th floor at 345 E. 24th Street.   • NHMA’S HISPANIC STUDENT MEDICAL SCHOOL RECRUITMENT FAIR The National Hispanic Medical Association in partnership wit the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) are having a Medical School Recruitment fair. It will be held on March 21, 2009 at the Conference Exhibit Hall at the Marriot at the Brooklyn Bridge. This program is free and all are encouraged to attend. Students will be able to hear presentations from medical school recruiters and the AAMC; meet recruiters from medical schools across the country; meet Hispanic physicians/residents/medical students from across the country; and, meet other students are interested in the same career goals.   • CSU NORTHRIDGE BRIDGE TO DOCTORATE (LSAMP-BD) PROGRAM California State University Northridge has been designated as the site for the 7th cohort of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation – Bridge to the Doctorate (LSAMP-BD) Program. The LSAMP BD program offers outstanding support at the Master’s level, providing tuition, a generous living stipend ($30,000 each year), health insurance, funds for travel and research, and extensive academic support. This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in pursuing advanced studies in Science, Engineering, and Math to gain research experience and receive support at the Master’s level in preparation for the Ph.D. To be eligible, candidates must have participated in LSAMP or AMP at any university or community college as undergraduates.   • NORTH EAST REGIONAL ALLIANCE MEDPREP SCHOLARS PROGRAM The Northeast Regional Alliance (NERA) MedPrep Scholars Program is a partnership between New Jersey Medical School, Mount Sinai School of Medicine Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center. The Program uniquely builds on the collective expertise of four outstanding institutions to expand health careers preparation for minority and disadvantaged students from junior high school through medical school with the goal of increasing competitiveness for medical school.   • SUNY LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate At Stony Brook University This is a National Science Foundation Program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Disciplines. Selected students will be provided fellowships for 2 years, beginning fall 2009. All interested candidates must have participated in an LSAMP program, have obtained their bachelors degree in a s STEM discipline, be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, Have a 3.0 GPA or better, plan to start a graduate degree in a STEM discipline and be accepted into a STEM graduate program at Stony Brook. Students will receive stipends of $30,000 annually, paid tuition and fees, involvement in the supportive BD community, mentoring, research opportunities, and enriched academic services and support.
